Maximilian and Lukas are Special Olympics Youth Leaders and a Unified pair, who will lead a Youth Innovation Project that encourages more Special Olympics athletes to get involved in the sport of sailing in Austria.

Not only do Maximilian and Lukas want to grow their partnership and friendship through sailing, but they want to bring more youth with and without intellectual disabilities together with this sport. They plan to engage youth in sailing by partnering with the Krainer Sport School and  have the personal goal of preparing Maximilian to sail in his first ever Sailing Regatta with Lukas at the end of their project. They hope that their partnership and example at the sport school will inspire more youth to become Unified sailing partners.

Over the course of 9 months, Maximilian and Lukas will participate in training sessions at the Krainer Sport School and introduce Unified Sailing to other students there, with the goal of engaging at least 50 participants in their project. Preparations for the Regatta will include two training sessions per week at Lake Brennsee in Austria with help from Lorraine Angerer, who works with young athletes interested in sailing. Maximilian and Lukas hope this project will help them to develop a long-lasting friendship that perhaps even leads to more Regattas in the future. They plan to make an impact on a larger scale as well through a long-term partnership with Krainer that helps to expand Unified Sailing in the region and provides a best practice example for inclusive cooperation to be replicated at other sports clubs.
