Maria and Sixto are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from El Salvador who will lead a Youth Innovation Project to expand the Special Olympics Young Athletes program in her country.
Maria and Sixto aim to partner with nursery schools for children without intellectual disabilities to involve them alongside children with intellectual disabilities in inclusive Young Athletes activities. The project will focus on training teachers and educating parents on the importance of inclusion.

Maria is inspired by her experience as a sibling of a person with an intellectual disability. Throughout her life, she has spent a lot of time accompanying her brother, Sixto, to Special Olympics events. She has learned how inclusion through sport can bring out talents and skills in all people. Maria hopes this project will increase awareness of intellectual disabilities and lead to future youth involvement in Special Olympics Unified Sports. She also aims to continue developing projects for inclusion by building on the partnerships formed in the Young Athletes expansion.

Maria and Sixto are excited to be a part of the Unified Generation. To them, the Unified Generation is about setting goals for inclusion and following through. As leaders of the Unified Generation, Maria and Sixto are creating inclusion in El Salvador and inspiring inclusion around the world.
