Jacob Wilhelmus is a Special Olympics Youth Leader from South Africa who will lead a Youth Innovation Project to expand Unified Sports programs to a new school in Johannesburg to promote inclusion, teamwork, and trust between youth with and without intellectual disabilities.
By introducing Unified floor hockey programs to a new school, Jacob Wilhelmus seeks to increase opportunities for youth participation in Unified Sports and educate participants about opportunities available through Special Olympics South Africa. . Jacob will work with Special Olympics South Africa staff to train Special Olympics athletes as floor hockey officials. These officials will help with the implementation of Unified floorball into the new school.

Over nine months, Jacob Wilhelmus will lead a team of Special Olympics volunteers and certified coaches from the Gauteng Floor Hockey League to plan and implement his project. He will introduce Special Olympics South Africa programming into a new school community and engage 200 individuals with and without intellectual disabilities in activities that promote teamwork and inclusion through inclusive floor hockey programs, school, and community events. Jacob Wilhelmus will include different training activities, games, and competitions during a five-month program focused on developing player skills and Unified floorball knowledge. Jacob Wilhelmus believes the success of his project will permanently expand Unified Sports programming in South Africa and raise awareness of people with intellectual disabilities. Jacob Wilhelmus hopes to inspire new Special Olympics Youth Leaders to join him as the Unified Generation expands to new schools across South Africa.
