Loyda and Luis are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from El Salvador leading a Youth Innovation Project to host a Unified “marathon” of relays for Special Olympics athletes and Unified Partners.
In their project, Loyda and Luis are committed to promoting healthy lifestyles, raising awareness about health initiatives, and sensitizing the population about the skills of people with intellectual disabilities.

In El Salvador, marathons are both common and popular – they attract racers from all over the country. Loyda and Luis are adapting the concept of a marathon race into a series of Unified relay races for youth with and without intellectual disabilities to compete in. During the event, Loyda and Luis will introduce additional challenges and obstacles for the competing relay teams to showcase their creativity, athleticism, and teamwork.

Loyda and Luis are excited to lead this project and engage new youth leaders and increase inclusion in El Salvador. Through their relay races, Loyda and Luis will create opportunities to learn about health and fitness, improve attitudes towards people with intellectual disabilities, and empower youth to create opportunities for inclusion for all.
