Giorgia and Lisa are organizing 6 day trips in their locality for youth to explore nature and exercise together.

About the Project Leaders

Giorgia is a 22-year-old who lives in Lecco. Giorgia’s experience of having a sibling with ID made her realize early on in life that people with intellectual disabilities have more difficulties interacting with others and have fewer opportunities to share moments with other young people and make new friends. She wants all youth with and without intellectual disabilities to have the opportunity to develop strong, long-lasting friendships. Giorgia is proud to be a part of the Unified Generation because she wants to live in a society where young people with disabilities are included and can easily make friends.

Lisa is a 22-year-old who lives in Lecco. Lisa has been an athlete for Special Olympics Italy for 9 years. She decided to become a Youth Leader because she wants to help her community to become more inclusive, and she likes to speak with new people and gain their perspectives.

The Inspiration

The Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns is what inspired Giorgia and Lisa. Simple things that people priorly took for granted, such as having fun with friends, participating in outdoors activities with a group, exploring the beautiful nature of Italy, such as the place between the Lake Como and the mountains.

The Plan

Giorgia and Lisa came up with MountaINclusion. Through this project, they will create a Unified group of young people, with and without intellectual disabilities, and together they will organize several outdoor activities or day trips (such as walks, hikes, trekking) near the lake and in their local mountains.

Project Goals

Giorgia and Lisa aim to organize at least 6 full day trips in their local territory, create a unified group of at least 60 young people who will share moments of outdoor sport and activities, and who will stay in contact to organize future events. They hope to create new unified experiences and teams and identify in the group others young leaders who can help get in contact with the local realities: local municipalities and administrations, other organizations and sports clubs, schools and universities, to raise awareness about intellectual disabilities through their project.
