Oteng and Nonofo are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Botswana and participants of the 2019 Global Youth Leadership Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Their project aims to spread Special Olympics programming to all universities across the country. Special Olympics has empowered Oteng and Nonofo to be advocates for inclusion in all areas of their lives and showed them that “everyone can do everything, just in different ways.” Now these Youth Leaders want to share this powerful message with other youth by recruiting university students to get involved in Special Olympics and increase athlete participation through inclusive Unified Sports programming.

Over the course of 9 months, Oteng and Nonofo will engage 50 new Youth Leaders and create Special Olympics Clubs at universities all over Botswana. Their hope is that, by the end of the project, there will be at least two new Unified Pairs at all of the clubs they establish. As motivated and forward-thinking members of the Unified Generation, Oteng and Nonofo believe that exposing more youth to inclusive environments is a major step toward practicing inclusion everywhere and changing the world’s perspective about people with intellectual disabilities.
