Simon and Josiah are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Guam who were inspired to lead a Youth Innovation Project that combines inclusion and sustainability efforts to make the island of Guam a cleaner and more accepting place.

Simon and Josiah are developing an opportunity for inclusion through a community-based environmental conservation project that brings youth with and without intellectual disabilities together to work toward this common goal. Through community-based environmental protection activities for Unified pairs, Simon and Josiah hope to improve awareness about intellectual disabilities and sustainability. This will both foster a culture of inclusion and benefit the island of Guam.

Over 6 months, Simon and Josiah will work to create new partnerships with sustainability-based community programs and recruit new Youth Leaders to participate in interactive activities promoting conservation. Youth will be encouraged to develop Unified pairs and build their advocacy skills so that they can push for ongoing community activities like these in the future. For Simon and Josiah, being part of the Unified Generation means celebrating differences and working toward a shared goal of keeping Guam clean and safe, just as youth engaged by their project will be inspired to do.
