Taylor organized a Special Olympics Winter Games in Columbus, Ohio, bringing athletes, families, volunteers, and OSU students together for sports, performances, and a celebration of inclusion during the winter season.

About the Project

The project organized a Special Olympics Winter Games at Columbus City Schools in Columbus, Ohio. Taylor, a youth leader attending Ohio State University, wanted to provide local athletes with opportunities to compete and participate in sports during the winter season. The Winter Games featured inclusive sports, a cheerleading performance, a dance party, and concluded with an awards ceremony.

The Inspiration

Taylor was inspired by the Special Olympics athletes involved with her local program. Through volunteering, she witnessed their determination and love of competition and wanted to help create more opportunities for athletes to participate in sports throughout the year.

She was also supported by her mentor and the Columbus City Schools Special Olympics staff, who provided guidance and insight throughout the planning and implementation of the event.

The Project

The project hosted a Winter Games that brought athletes, families, volunteers, and members of the community together to celebrate sport, teamwork, and inclusion. By bringing together Ohio State University (OSU) students, local Special Olympics athletes, and members of the Columbus community, the event created opportunities for participants to compete in a welcoming and supportive environment.

In addition to the sports activities, participants enjoyed a cheerleading performance, dance party, and awards ceremony to celebrate the day's accomplishments.

Project Impact

The project successfully achieved its objective of hosting the Winter Games and creating additional opportunities for athletes to participate in sports during the winter season. The event helped address the gap in programming and competition opportunities while creating a welcoming and positive experience for athletes, families, and volunteers.

Feedback from athletes, parents, and volunteers affirmed the success of the event and highlighted its impact on both the participants and the broader community.

Project Leaders Reflection

Taylor's favorite memory was seeing the joy of the athletes as they crossed the finish line and completed their routines. Moments like these reminded her that the challenges she experienced throughout the project, including time constraints and limited resources, were worth overcoming.

Through the experience, Taylor learned that even small acts of encouragement and thoughtful organization can make a meaningful difference in participants' confidence and overall experience.

Looking ahead, Taylor plans to continue advocating for inclusive sports and volunteering with Special Olympics, both at OSU and beyond. She also hopes to mentor future student leaders so that the momentum and awareness built through this project can continue to grow long after the event.
