One Team, One Dream united students with and without intellectual disabilities in Jamaica to build meaningful friendships, expand Unified programming, and promote inclusion through shared activities and leadership opportunities.

About the Project

One Team, One Dream was designed to create opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) to connect through Unified activities. By introducing inclusive programming to two new schools, the project encouraged collaboration, acceptance, and a stronger sense of belonging for all participants.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by a desire to create environments where every student feels valued, included, and supported. The youth leaders were motivated by the resilience and enthusiasm of Special Olympics athletes and received encouragement from Special Olympics Jamaica, teachers, and their project team throughout the process.

The Project

The team introduced Unified pair activities in two new schools, bringing students together through engaging and collaborative experiences. Despite challenges including hurricane-related delays, communication obstacles, and initial hesitation from schools, the youth leaders used teamwork, persistence, and creative activities to build trust and encourage participation. Their efforts helped students step outside their comfort zones and form genuine connections.

Project Impact

The project expanded Unified programming to two new schools and engaged 15 Special Olympics athletes and 20 peers without ID in meaningful activities. It also developed four new youth leaders and provided leadership opportunities for five youth participants in meaningful roles. Through the initiative,students built friendships, increased confidence, and demonstrated that inclusion can be practiced every day within their schools and communities.

Project Leader Reflection

Denisher and Britney are most proud of creating a space where students felt accepted, comfortable, and empowered to be themselves. Watching friendships develop and seeing participants grow more confident reinforces the importance of inclusion. The experience strengthened their leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, and they hope to continue One Team, One Dream annually as a lasting tradition that promotes unity, acceptance, and belonging throughout Jamaica.
