Youth leaders Fatimata and Leslie from Special Olympics Burkina Faso found that youth voices in their community were often poorly documented or lost, limiting the ability for their ideas to be translated into action. Their project aimed to empower young people to share contributions that are valued, supported, and followed by the community. By developing a consistent approach to documenting youth perspectives, the youth leaders sought to ensure that Special Olympics could fully benefit from the potential, ideas, and innovation of young leaders while reducing missed opportunities for meaningful change.
Throughout the project, Fatimata and Leslie felt strongly supported by their community and the people involved in the events. They engaged youth and athletes throughout the process,demonstrating the importance of unity, collaboration, and standing up for one another. Their experiences reinforced the value of creating spaces where young people feel empowered to participate, share their ideas, and contribute to positive change.
The project provided session support during the Special Olympics Burkina Faso Regional Youth Summit and Athlete Congress, with a focus on topics such as time management, resource utilization, and program accessibility. The youth leaders helped facilitate inclusive participation by documenting discussions, ideas, and recommendations in real time. Following each session, they organized and consolidated the information into clear, actionable reports that could be shared with stakeholders and used to guide appropriate follow-up and next steps.

Looking ahead, Fatimata and Leslie hope toestablishsession support and documentation as a standard practice across Special Olympics Burkina Faso events. By integrating youth leadership more systematically into event planning, documentation, and organizational decision-making, they hope to create continued opportunities for young people to influence the work of Special Olympics.
Fatimata and Leslie reflected on their experiences supporting the Regional Youth Summit and Athlete Congress, highlighting how the project strengthened their ability to work together under pressure. Organizing and managing the events presented challenges, but through the engagement, collaboration, and involvement of everyone around them, they were able to overcome these challenges and successfully deliver the project.

The youth leaders are most proud of the success of the events and the opportunity to support greater youth participation. Moving forward, they plan to continue advancing inclusion through different programs and initiatives throughout their region, building on the lessons and experience gained through this project.
