Clare, a youth leader from Special Olympics Canada: Newfoundland & Labrador, led a health promotion project that connected her community with accessible health and fitness resources. Through exercise sessions, educational materials, and hands-on activities, participants learned about strength, flexibility, endurance, and healthy living. The project also provided participants with fitness equipment and resources they could continue using at home, helping promote long-term access to health and fitness opportunities.

About the Project

Clare, a youth leader from Special Olympics Canada: Newfoundland & Labrador, developed and led a health promotion project to connect her local community with accessible health and fitness resources. The project aimed to empower individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities by increasing access to health education, fitness information, and practical resources. Participants received positive and engaging information throughout the event, and each participant was able to leave with a piece of fitness equipment and guidance on how to use it safely and effectively at home.

The Inspiration

Clare’s inspiration came directly from her community. After recognizing gaps in inclusive access to health and fitness information, she wanted to help athletes and families identify resources that were available to them but may have been difficult to find or understand.

To bring the project to life, Clare partnered with fellow students, staff, and local clubs to connect community members with health and fitness resources and create opportunities for everyone to learn and participate together.

The Project

Clare’s project introduced participants to a range of health promotion topics, including endurance, flexibility, strength, and preventative health practices. Participants learned exercises they could complete using the fitness equipment provided at the end of the session, helping them continue incorporating physical activity into their routines at home.

The project also included weekly sports sessions and a weekly newsletter featuring health and fitness information. When participants raised questions or identified specific needs, Clare shared additional resources through email, online campaigns, and in-person sessions.

Project Impact

One of the most meaningful moments for Clare was watching athletes choose the piece of fitness equipment they would take home. This demonstrated how the project provided participants with both knowledge and practical tools they could continue using beyond the event.

Clare also valued seeing community members and volunteers try new sports and activities together. These experiences helped demonstrate that health and fitness opportunities can be made more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

Project Leaders Reflection

Through the project, Clare developed greater confidence in communication and public speaking. She also strengthened her skills in professional email communication, delegating tasks, and creating timelines to keep different aspects of the project on track.

Looking toward the future, Clare believes that continued collaboration with athletes will be key to expanding the health and fitness initiative. By involving athletes in the development of future programs and resources, the community can continue creating opportunities that are accessible, inclusive, and responsive to their needs.
