The Siblings Innovation Camp brought together Special Olympics Zimbabwe athletes and their siblings for an overnight experience centered on storytelling, family connection, and inclusion. Through activities such as interviews, photography, videography, family discussions, and Unified Sports, participants strengthened sibling relationships, shared their experiences, and built a lasting network of support.

About the Project

Recognizing the important role siblings play in fostering inclusion and supporting athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Isheanesu created 'The Power of Storytelling' project to strengthen family connections through an inclusive overnight camp.

The Sibling's Innovation Camp provided multiple opportunities for families to share their experiences, including interviews, photography, and videography to capture and amplify participants' stories beyond the camp itself. Athletes and their siblings from across Zimbabwe came together to connect, learn from one another, and build lasting relationships.

The project aimed to foster a strong social support network for athletes and their siblings while advancing Special Olympics' mission of inclusion. It also created a digital collection of stories from athletes and their family members of all ages, serving as a source of inspiration and encouragement for others in similar situations.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by the youth leader's cousin, whose determination, resilience, and everyday experiences highlighted the importance of creating meaningful opportunities for siblings and family members to learn from and support one another.

Throughout the project, the youth leader also received incredible support from the Special Olympics Zimbabwe staff, whose guidance, encouragement, and teamwork really helped bring the camp to life.

The Project

The project featured an overnight experience filled with storytelling activities, a bonfire, family discussions, and Unified Sports.

These activities gave participants practical tools to strengthen relationships with their siblings, deepen their understanding of inclusion, and build more supportive and inclusive families and communities.

Project Impact

The Siblings Innovation Camp successfully fostered greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusion among participants. By strengthening family relationships and equipping young people with practical skills, the project empowered siblings to become stronger advocates and support systems at home and in their communities.

Project Leaders Reflection

Reflecting on their favorite memories from the project, Isheanesu shared that the genuine friendships formed throughout the camp stood out the most. They especially highlighted Cultural Night, where participants came together to celebrate their diverse backgrounds and enjoy one another's company.

Overall, the project reinforced the vital role siblings play as advocates for inclusion. Through connection, encouragement, and shared experiences, participants left better equipped to build more inclusive families and communities.
