Youth Leaders Godspower I and Isatou led an initiative to increase awareness and understanding of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) at the University of The Gambia. Through the implementation of Unified Sports, they created opportunities for meaningful interaction between university students and Special Olympics Gambia athletes.

About the Project

Godspower I and Isatou aimed to strengthen collaboration with the University of The Gambia to promote inclusion in their campus community. Through the implementation of Unified Sports, they facilitated meaningful interaction between University of The Gambia students and Special Olympics Gambia athletes, creating a supportive environment where participants could engage through physical activity and teamwork.

In addition, through the Special Olympics Gambia Inclusion Forum, they worked to integrate Special Olympics activities and programming into the University of The Gambia Student Union agenda. This integration helped institutionalize inclusive events within student leadership structures, increasing visibility for disability inclusion and strengthening the university’s commitment to accessibility, participation, and belonging for all students.

The Inspiration

Godspower I and Isatou were supported by the University of The Gambia team, volunteers, and fellow colleagues, who collaborated with them in making their project come to life. They were inspired by the energy and dedication of athletes in the Special Olympics program.

The Project

Through sports games like football and tug of war, University of The Gambia students and Special Olympics Gambia athletes participated in Unified Sports, having fun and promoting inclusivity.

Project Impact

The SOG Inclusion Forum brought together over 100 University of The Gambia students and Special Olympics Gambia athletes in a Unified Sports event, where they encouraged inclusion through sports activities and games.

Project Leaders Reflection

Godspower I and Isatou’s favorite moments from the Special Olympics Gambia Inclusion Forum were watching university students and Special Olympics athletes support one another and compete as a unified team, especially during the Tug of War event. One of the main challenges they faced was coordinating effectively with the Student Union and guiding the project from an initial idea into a successful and meaningful event, which underscored the importance of strong communication and planning. Moving forward, Godspower I and Isatou aim to continue advancing inclusion by organizing additional Unified Sports events and expanding partnerships with other schools.
