The Unified Dancers project, led by Youth Leaders Aholibama and Victoria, brought young people together through K-pop dance in Mexico. Through school and community performances, the team showcased participants’ talents, celebrated cultural exchange, promoted inclusion, and raised awareness of Special Olympics.

About the Project

Aholibama and Victoria noticed that opportunities for inclusion in Mexico were limited, particularly in schools and artistic spaces where people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often participate separately. They wanted to change this by encouraging local dance studios and groups to create more inclusive opportunities for everyone to participate.

Their project was part of a Unified Youth Exchange between Special Olympics Mexico and a Special Olympics North America program. Through the Exchange, Youth Leaders collaborated to identify challenges related to inclusion in their communities and develop projects to address them.

The Inspiration

Throughout the project, Aholibama and Victoria were inspired by the coaches, mentors, family members, and volunteers who offered guidance, resources, and emotional support. Their dedication to the Youth Leaders and the Special Olympics movement provided motivation and encouragement as the project developed.

The Project

Aholibama and Victoria created Unified K-pop dance teams that brought young people with and without IDD together through a shared love of dance and Korean pop music. The project introduced participants to new dance styles and cultural experiences while creating an inclusive space to learn, collaborate, and build friendships.

Using their funding, the Youth Leaders expanded K-pop dance opportunities to local schools and young people. The dance team also performed at schools and community events, showcasing the dancers' talents and promoting inclusion to wider audiences.

Project Impact

The project promoted inclusion and diversity by giving young people with and without IDD the opportunity to participate in an activity they enjoyed together. Through dance, Aholibama and Victoria helped break down barriers, build connections, and raise awareness of Special Olympics throughout their community.

As the Youth Leaders shared, "The public performances and the impact of the dance team changed the way the community perceives people with IDD, highlighting their strengths and abilities."

Project Leaders Reflection

One of Aholibama and Victoria's favorite memories was the team's first public performance. Although the event brought nerves and excitement, completing the performance filled them with pride as they watched each young leader and team member showcase their talent and dedication. The overwhelmingly positive community feedback reinforced the value of their work.

Throughout the project, the Youth Leaders also strengthened their collaboration, communication, empathy, and group coordination skills.

Looking ahead, Aholibama and Victoria plan to establish the dance team as a permanent group, participating in local and national events to continue showcasing the talents of young people and demonstrating the power of inclusion through dance.
