Youth leaders Nonde and Mundia from Special Olympics Zambia launched the Unity in Action project to expand inclusion through Unified Sports, Unified Schools, and sibling engagement initiatives. By partnering with three schools and two sports organizations, they helped create new inclusive opportunities for individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), while also training local volunteers to support the programs and fostering greater community acceptance through sport.

About the Project

The Unity in Action project promotes social inclusion and acceptance through Unified Sports, Unified Schools, and sibling engagement initiatives. By bringing together individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), along with their families, the project creates opportunities for meaningful participation, teamwork, and leadership. Through inclusive sports and school-based activities, participants build confidence, develop essential life skills, and strengthen connections within their communities.

In addition, the project's sibling engagement component provides mentorship, peer support, and advocacy opportunities for siblings of individuals with IDD, recognizing their important role in fostering inclusion.

The Inspiration

Nonde and Mundia credit their coaches, mentors, friends, and teammates for inspiring and encouraging them throughout the project. Their support motivated the youth leaders to create opportunities where everyone could learn, play, and grow together.

The Project

The project established partnerships with three schools and two sports organizations to expand inclusive opportunities within the community. As part of these efforts, the youth leaders recruited and trained 10 local volunteers to serve as coaches and mentors. Together, they implemented Unified Sports and Unified Schools programming while also launching sibling engagement initiatives and support groups to strengthen family involvement and promote inclusion beyond the playing field.

Project Impact

The project helped unite the community through the shared experience of sports. By creating inclusive spaces where everyone could participate, the initiative encouraged greater understanding, acceptance, and teamwork. As a result, participants became more welcoming of one another, helping to build a stronger and more inclusive community.

Project Leaders Reflection

Nonde and Mundia found the experience of planning and implementing the project both rewarding and transformative. One of their favorite aspects was playing sports alongside their peers and experiencing the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a team.

One youth leader reflected that they were initially shy and hesitant to speak in front of others. Over time, however, they gained the confidence to lead small activities, ask for support when needed, and grow into a stronger leader.

Looking ahead, the youth leaders remain committed to encouraging others to participate in Unified Sports and inclusive activities. They hope to continue creating opportunities where everyone feels welcome while sharing the knowledge and leadership skills they gained through the project with future youth leaders.
