Youth leaders Maria Fernanda and Mariagni introduced students to the power of Unified Sports through an interactive volleyball workshop. As part of an exchange with Special Olympics Connecticut, they promoted inclusion, strengthened their leadership skills, and inspired students to become champions of inclusion in their schools.

About the Project

Youth leaders Maria Fernanda and Mariagni planned a workshop for students from two schools to introduce them to Unified Sports and share their personal experiences on the playing field. The workshop gave students the opportunity to learn about inclusion before taking part in Unified volleyball drills and games.

The project aimed to inspire young people to become champions of inclusion in their schools and encourage youth with and without intellectual disabilities to join the Special Olympics movement as active athletes.

The Inspiration

Maria Fernanda and Mariagni were inspired and supported by their mentors, who played an important role throughout the project. The youth leaders shared that they learned not only from their mentors, but also from each other as they worked together to bring their vision to life.

The Project

The youth leaders successfully demonstrated how fun and meaningful Unified Sports can be while highlighting the importance of inclusion in sports and everyday life. Through the workshop and volleyball activities, students experienced firsthand how bringing people together can create opportunities for connection and positive change.

The project was part of an exchange with youth leaders from Special Olympics Connecticut. Although the groups worked together from different locations, they shared experiences and ideas that showed how the Special Olympics movement can connect young leaders across communities. The youth leaders recognized that they can carry these experiences forward by sharing how Special Olympics has helped them grow as individuals and leaders.

Project Impact

The project introduced students to the joy of Unified Sports and showed them how sports can create meaningful opportunities for inclusion. By participating in volleyball activities alongside their peers, students experienced the power of teamwork, connection, and inclusion firsthand.

Project Leaders Reflection

Throughout the project, Maria Fernanda and Mariagni gained confidence in expressing themselves and strengthened their leadership skills. At first, they were unsure how students would respond to the workshop and conversations about inclusion. After seeing the positive response, they came out of their shells and became more confident in sharing their experiences and spreading the message of inclusion.
