Youth leaders from Kenya took the lead in planning and delivering the Welcome Dinner and Entertainment program during the Special Olympics Africa Regional Youth Summit. Through organizing performances, coordinating activities, and engaging delegates, the project created meaningful opportunities for young people to demonstrate leadership while helping to build an inclusive and welcoming summit experience.

About the Project

Recognizing that youth leaders are often not provided opportunities to demonstrate leadership in planning, organizing, and hosting events, the project empowered young people to take ownership of the Welcome Dinner and Entertainment portion of the Special Olympics Africa Regional Youth Summit. Youth leaders served as event coordinators, emcees, and organizers, gaining hands-on experience in event planning, communication, teamwork, and leadership while creating an engaging and memorable experience for summit delegates.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by the belief that young people have the potential to be effective leaders when given meaningful opportunities and support. The youth leaders were motivated by a desire to create a welcoming, youth-led summit experience and to demonstrate the importance of including youth voices in decision-making spaces. Seeing peers develop confidence and leadership skills reinforced their commitment to creating opportunities for meaningful youth participation.

The Project

Youth leaders planned and delivered the Welcome Dinner and Entertainment program for the Special Olympics Africa Regional Youth Summit. They coordinated speakers, performances, and cultural presentations while serving in visible leadership roles throughout the event. Through collaboration with fellow youth leaders, mentors, and Special Olympics staff, they successfully organized an engaging program that encouraged participation, fostered connections among delegates, and showcased youth leadership in action.

Project Impact

The project created meaningful leadership opportunities for youth in a high-profile setting, allowing them to strengthen their confidence, communication, teamwork, and event management skills. The Welcome Dinner and Entertainment program helped create a fun, engaging, and inclusive atmosphere that encouraged delegates to connect and build relationships. The initiative also increased youth visibility in leadership and decision-making roles, value of trusting young people with responsibility, and provided a model for future youth-led events throughout the region.

Project Leader Reflection

The youth explained that one of the most rewarding aspects of the project was seeing the Welcome Dinner come together after months of planning and teamwork. Watching youth confidently serve as emcees, performers, and coordinators demonstrated how much growth and leadership development had taken place. The experience reinforced the importance of communication, collaboration, flexibility, and trust when organizing large events. Most importantly, it shows that when young people are given opportunities to lead, they bring creativity, energy, and meaningful contributions that strengthen their communities.
