Special Olympics is a global organization that serves more than 3.4 million athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is staggering.
The Power of Sport. For every Special Olympics athlete, there are many more waiting for their chance. Help us reach one more person who wants to participate.LEARN MORE
Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) was established in 1978 as part of Special Olympics Inc. Since our formation, we have grown steadily to reach our present position. There are currently over 130 Special Olympics groups in Great Britain, run by over 2,600 volunteers and 8,000 athletes who benefit from our sports program.
Opportunities and Benefits
We presently offer opportunities to children and adults with a learning disability and will work to expand opportunities to reach a further in the years to come. Children and adults with learning disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally, socially and spiritually and, through their activities, exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but "their voices" as well.
Partnering and Support
Special Olympics Great Britain is constantly collaborating and co-operating with other charities, as well as working in partnership with Disability Sports Organizations and National Governing Bodies in order to provide sporting opportunities for people with a learning disability.
