For the second year in a row, Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School embraced the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. The D-R chapter of the Best Buddies organization held a program during each of the high school’s lunch periods on Wednesday to encourage students to make a pledge to stop using the word “retard,” or any variation of the word, which carries a negative connotation against those with mental disabilities.
“We are trying to spread awareness about the derogatory use of the word,” said Tim Tichacek, the school’s transition coordinator and faculty advisor for the Best Buddies group. “We feel that people use the word too often and they don’t even really think about the effects that it has on people with disabilities.
