Meet Hafiyyan, a Special Olympics badminton player from Malaysia whose lifelong love for the sport has helped him grow in confidence and purpose.
Hafiyyan has loved badminton since he was a young child, first picking up a racket at just 9 years old. He is now 21, but when diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15, it affected his brain and changed many aspects of his life. Despite these challenges, Hafiyyan’s passion for badminton never faded.
In 2023, he joined Special Olympics Malaysia and returned to the court in a new way as he was surrounded by teammates, coaches, and a community that believed in his abilities.
Through his determination and training, coach’s guidance, and family’s support, Hafiyyan grew to be more confident in his abilities. His parents spoke to how being part of Special Olympics has helped him grow into a more self-assured person, both on and off the court.
On the court, Hafiyyan now not only focuses on improving his own skills but also takes pride in helping guide his teammates as they grow and learn alongside him.
Badminton is also a family affair. Hafiyyan’s father, who has been his coach since he was 10 years old, now trains many Special Olympics Malaysia badminton players, supporting them as they develop their skills and confidence through sport.
For Hafiyyan, badminton is more than a game. He credits the sport as a way to build confidence, support others, and be part of a community that celebrates every athlete’s ability, while always working hard and striving to do his best.
