Meet powerlifter Aegir Ólafsson, whose life has been shaped by his passion for strength, sport, and competition.
In the weight room, Aegir Ólafsson is known for one thing above all: commitment. Growing up in the Icelandic countryside, he discovered powerlifting and quickly fell in love with the discipline and focus it required. What started as an interest became a daily pursuit, giving him a sense of purpose and pride through training which took him all the way to the Special Olympics World Games.
Under the guidance of his coach, Örvar Arnarson, Aegir’s dedication stood out immediately. Orvar describes him as completely committed.“His mindset, dedicated, just always full on. He doesn’t stop until the time is finished, you have to throw him out.”
That dedication led Aegir to achieve something he once never imagined: competing at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. “It was an unbelievable feeling,” Aegir shared. “It was an honor to be there.” For his sister, Rannveig Ólafsdóttir, watching him compete was unforgettable, describing the atmosphere as electric, with a packed crowd cheering him on in a powerful, emotional moment.
Following Berlin, Aegir continued to build on his journey, competing at the International Powerlifting Federation Championships in Keflavik, where he had the chance to perform in front of his family on home soil. For them, it was a proud and meaningful moment, seeing first hand the impact he has had not only in sport, but in the lives of those around him.
Powerlifting has helped Aegir grow in confidence and self-belief, giving him a platform to challenge himself and succeed. As he says, being part of Special Olympics is an amazing opportunity, one that has made him proud of who he is and what he can achieve.
