Special Olympics Athletes lived an unforgettable experience in a powerful demonstration of inclusion with their participation in the third-place match of the Copa América 2019 in Sao Palo, Brazil.
Athlete Enzo Borges and Unified Partner Pedro Henrique Embova from Special Olympics Brazil participated in the opening ceremony of the third place game of the Copa América Brazil 2019, escorting the team captains of Argentina and Chile, Lionel Messi and Gary Medel, unto the field. Enzo and Pedro play in Special Olympics Unified Sports, an initiative that brings together people with and without intellectual disabilities under the same team.
This activities and opportunities are possible thanks to the partnership between Special Olympics Latin America and CONMEBOL, started back in 2006. The agreement seeks to expand and improve the development of soccer in Special Olympics Programs in the region, for athletes with and without intellectual disabilities, as well as offering more, better options for high-quality training and competition, making soccer more than just a sport, but a platform that allows communities the chance to discover the true potential of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics and CONMEBOL have shared values and acknowledge the power of sports and the impact it can have in the lives of children and adults with or without intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Latin America will continue working together with CONMEBOL to generate more opportunities for the recognition of our athletes, public awareness of our organization and the fostering and development of soccer.
Atletas de Olimpiadas Especiales tuvieron la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia inolvidable y una importante demostración de inclusión, al participar del partido por tercer lugar de la Copa América 2019, en Sao Paulo, Brasil.
Enzo Borges y Pedro Henrique Embova, atleta y compañero unificado de Olimpiadas Especiales Brasil, compartieron con los equipos nacionales de Argentina y Chile en el ingreso a la cancha del partido por el tercer lugar de la Copa América y, caminaron de la mano de los capitanes de ambos equipos, Lionel Messi y Gary Medel. Enzo y Pedro participan en Deportes Unificados de Olimpiadas Especiales, iniciativa que une a personas con y sin discapacidad intelectual en un mismo equipo.
Estas actividades y oportunidades son posibles gracias a la alianza entre Olimpiadas Especiales América Latina y CONMEBOL que data desde el 2006. El acuerdo de colaboración tiene como objetivo ampliar y mejorar el desarrollo de fútbol en los Programas de Olimpiadas Especiales en la región para los atletas con y sin discapacidad intelectual. Como también ofrecer más y mejores opciones de entrenamiento y competición de calidad, logrando así que el fútbol se convierta en un medio de desarrollo, no sólo deportivo, si no también como una plataforma que permita a las comunidades conocer las habilidades de los atletas con discapacidad intelectual.
Olimpiadas Especiales y CONMEBOL comparten valores en común y reconocen el poder del deporte y el impacto que puede tener en la vida de niños, jóvenes y adultos con y sin discapacidad intelectual. Olimpiadas Especiales América Latina continuará trabajando junto a CONMEBOL para generar más y más oportunidades de reconocimiento de nuestros atletas, conocimiento público de la organización y promoción del futbol.
