All for Health is a youth-led health promotion project in Hungary that empowers young people with and without intellectual disabilities to become “health messengers.” Through inclusive training, curriculum development, and peer-led sessions, the project builds knowledge, leadership, and healthier communities within Special Olympics Hungary.

About the Project

All for Health is a health education initiative designed to improve access to preventive health/health promotion knowledge for young people with intellectual disabilities. The project focused on topics such as nutrition, physical activity, mental health, relationships, and hygiene.

Youth leaders worked alongside university mentors and Special Olympics athletes to co-create an easy-to-understand training curriculum and deliver inclusive, interactive learning experiences. The project also established a foundation for a national network of trained “health messengers” who continue sharing knowledge in their communities.

The Inspiration

In Hungary, young people with intellectual disabilities often experience segregation in education, limiting their access to peer relationships and quality health education. The project was inspired by a desire to bridge this gap by bringing together youth with and without disabilities to learn collaboratively. With support from the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Health Sciences, the team believed young people could create meaningful, lasting change in their communities through inclusive health education

The Project

The project was implemented in three main phases: (1.) Curriculum Development (2.) Training Program, and (3.) Community Implementation. First, youth leaders and mentors created a health promotion toolkit in accessible language tailored to Special Olympics athletes. To accompanythe toolkit, a two-day, module-based training (4 sessions) was developed on topics of physical health, mental health, relationships, and hygiene. Finally, trained participants led health promotion sessions for athletes across Hungary.

Project Impact

The project created a strong and sustainable impact by establishing a national network of health messengers. Participants gained knowledge and the confidence to teach others extending the project’s reach beyond the initial training.

Project Leaders Reflection

David and Réka reflected that one of the greatest successes was seeing every participant master the material and confidently share their knowledge. They were especially proud of the collaborative curriculum they developed and the dedication of both athletes and university mentors.

The project also strengthened their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. While distance and coordination posed challenges, strong motivation and commitment helped the team overcome these obstacles.

Looking ahead, they are committed to continuing and expanding the project by training more health messengers and exploring new areas of health education, ensuring lasting impact and growth.
