All In for Inclusion is a Montana-based student-led project that united Special Olympics athletes and college students through joyful, inclusive events that elevated awareness and built lasting connections.

About the Project

All In for Inclusion was a student-led initiative at Carroll College in Montana that brought together students and Special Olympics athletes from the Helena Halos to build community through inclusive events. Activities ranged from pumpkin painting to puzzle night, with each event designed to encourage interaction and friendship. The project showcased how small, thoughtful gatherings can transform a campus culture.

The Inspiration

Youth leaders Ben Held and Tanner Davis were inspired by the impact of previous events and the joyful connections they sparked. Tanner, a Special Olympics athlete and club leader, brought lived experience and passion to the planning, while Ben used his platform as a student-athlete to elevate awareness. Together, they aimed to strengthen the identity and presence of Special Olympics on campus and throughout Helena.

The Project

Over nine months, the Carroll College Special Olympics Club organized themed events like Down Syndrome Awareness Day, Unified signing day, and Valentine's Day bouquet-making. Each event was co-designed by students and athlete-representatives, ensuring authenticity and inclusion. Club members also purchased reusable supplies and costumes to build a foundation for future events beyond the grant cycle.

Project Impact

The project engaged 13 Special Olympics athletes and 100 students without ID, introduced 30 new youth leaders, and established one new Unified School. The events gained visibility both on campus and in the broader Helena community, with 800 social media impressions and enthusiastic local participation. The inclusive atmosphere fostered real friendships, leadership growth, and a stronger sense of community.

Project Leader Reflection

Ben and Tanner are most proud of creating events that will endure and continue to promote inclusion for years to come. They learned the importance of listening to athlete voices, collaborating effectively, and planning with long-term goals in mind. They intend to build on this momentum by advocating for even more inclusion at Carroll College and expanding their outreach into new spaces.
