Lauren and Isabella developed a project to expand Unified Sports opportunities across Nova Scotia, Canada. By organizing a Unified Sports tournament followed by a celebratory dance for athletes and volunteers, they created an inclusive environment that brought schools and communities together, promoted Special Olympics, and encouraged greater participation in Unified Sports. The success of the event helped establish it as a recurring tournament.
About the Project
The goal of the project was to expand Unified Sports throughout Nova Scotia by increasing participation among schools and youth leaders while raising awareness of Unified Sports within schools and the broader community. To achieve this, Lauren and Isabella organized a Unified basketball tournament that brought together athletes, students, volunteers, and schools for a day of inclusive competition. The event concluded with a dance that provided an opportunity for participants to celebrate, socialize, and build friendships in a welcoming environment.
The Inspiration
The project was inspired by the youth leader's experience participating in sports and Special Olympics events. Having experienced firsthand the positive impact of inclusive competition and community engagement, they wanted to provide similar opportunities for others and expand access to Unified Sports throughout Nova Scotia.
The Project
Lauren and Isabella planned and hosted a Unified basketball tournament designed to increase awareness and participation in Unified Sports. They coordinated participating schools, athletes, volunteers, and event logistics while creating opportunities for attendees to learn more about Special Olympics. Following the tournament, participants attended a dance that celebrated inclusion, friendship, and community, helping strengthen connections among athletes and volunteers.
Project Impact
The project successfully brought the community together through sport and inclusion while promoting Unified Sports and Special Olympics. Participants formed new friendships, gained a better understanding of inclusive sports opportunities, and enjoyed a fun and welcoming experience. The tournament's success generated enough support to continue hosting the event in the future, creating a lasting opportunity for youth engagement and Unified Sports growth throughout Nova Scotia.
Project Leader Reflection
One of the most memorable aspects of the project was experiencing the inclusive spirit of the event and watching new friendships develop among participants. Lauren and Isabella were especially proud of the opportunities they had to educate athletes, volunteers, and caregivers about Special Olympics and Unified Sports. Through planning and leading the tournament, they strengthened their leadership, confidence, and advocacy skills while seeing firsthand how sport can bring communities together.
