From Summit to Community Impact successfully organized Madagascar's National Youth Leadership Summit. The project empowered youth leaders in Madagascar to strengthen leadership skills, expand inclusive programming, and create new opportunities for young people with and without intellectual disabilities to lead and connect.

About the Project

'From Summit to Community Impact' focused on developing youth leadership through participation in the Regional Athlete Leaders Congress and Youth Leadership Summit in South Africa, followed by a National Youth Summit in Madagascar. The project aimed to equip young leaders with practical skills in event management, teamwork, and inclusion while creating opportunities to share those skills with others in their communities.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by the inclusive and supportive environment created by youth leaders across the Africa Region. Their commitment to acceptance, teamwork, and respect encouraged Kanto and Mahasetra to strengthen their own leadership abilities and create opportunities for other young people to experience the same sense of belonging and empowerment.

The Project

The project began with participation in the Regional Athlete Leaders Congress and Youth Leadership Summit in South Africa, where Kanto served as a Welcome Desk and Logistics Lead. Inspired by the knowledge, friendships, and leadership skills gained during the experience, the team returned to Madagascar determined to bring similar opportunities to their home program. With support from Special Olympics Madagascar, they organized the country's National Youth Leadership Summit, creating a space where youth and athlete leaders could learn about event management, teamwork, leadership, and inclusion. Although Mahasetra was unable to attend the regional summit due to work commitments, the team successfully translated the lessons learned into a national event that expanded leadership opportunities for young people throughout Madagascar.

Project Impact

The project engaged 28 youth in meaningful leadership roles, developed 44 new youth leaders, and involved 22 Special Olympics athletes alongside 34 peers without intellectual disabilities. It expanded Unified programming to two schools, established two new Unified Sports Clubs, and generated more than 7,000 social media impressions. Through the creation of Madagascar's National Youth Leadership Summit, the project strengthened leadership capacity and provided a sustainable model for developing future youth leaders across the country.

Project Leader Reflection

Kanto and Mahasetra are most proud of the personal growth and confidence gained through the project, particularly Kanto's journey from feeling hesitant in new environments to becoming a leader who trains and mentors others. Seeing youth leaders gain practical skills and take active roles in their communities reinforced the value of inclusion and leadership development. Looking ahead, Kanto hopes to continue promoting inclusion through art-based activities that bring people with and without intellectual disabilities together in welcoming spaces where everyone feels valued and connected.
