Inclusion Beyond Sports empowered youth in India to lead advocacy and inclusion initiatives in schools and communities through leadership training, Unified Clubs, and a vibrant multi-school carnival.
About the Project
Inclusion Beyond Sports was a youth-led initiative in Delhi, India, that expanded the idea of inclusion into schools and communities through leadership training, non-sporting activities, and a large Unified Carnival. The project brought together 17 schools and engaged youth through creative workshops, advocacy, and unified performances.
The Inspiration
Youth leaders Yashika Bhatt and Mahi Dheri were inspired by the energy of their athlete peers and the support of the Special Olympics Bharat network. Their friendship and shared vision fueled a commitment to build a more inclusive society beyond sports fields.
The Project
The team led orientation programs, trained students in inclusive leadership and event management, and launched Unified Clubs in four new schools. The project culminated in a Unified Carnival featuring sports, talent showcases, art, and awareness booths for over 300 attendees.
Project Impact
The project engaged 113 new youth leaders, reached over 7,000 people online, and created 4 new Unified Champion Schools and Clubs. It also empowered youth with and without ID to plan and lead events, expanding inclusive practices to both school and community spaces.
Project Leader Reflection
Yashika and Mahi are proudest of building sustainable leadership pipelines and successfully planning a major event celebrating inclusion. They plan to continue their efforts through National and Regional Youth Councils and by sharing their story to inspire others globally.
