Let Schools Play Badminton brought together young people with and without intellectual disabilities in Cameroon through the sport of badminton. The project created opportunities for friendship, leadership development, and expanded Unified programming.

About the Project

Let Schools Play Badminton aimed to introduce Unified badminton opportunities in local schools across Cameroon. Through the distribution of badminton kits, including rules manuals, coaching guides, and equipment, the project provided schools with the resources needed to launch and sustain Unified badminton programs. Youth leaders trained Unified pairs on the fundamentals of the sport and organized a badminton competition that brought athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together, promoting inclusion, teamwork, and leadership development through sport.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by a desire to make a positive difference in the community through sport and inclusion. The youth leaders were encouraged by the unwavering support of family members, coaches, and Special Olympics Cameroon staff, who believed in their ability to create opportunities for young people with and without intellectual disabilities to play, learn, and grow together.

The Project

The team organized Unified badminton training sessions and competitions that engaged athletes, Unified partners, coaches, and volunteers from across the community. Youth leaders successfully introduced more students to the sport. The project emphasized teamwork, discipline, leadership, and friendship both on and off the court.

Project Impact

The project used Unified badminton as a tool to bring young people from different backgrounds together, creating opportunities for inclusion, friendship, and personal growth. Through training sessions and competition, participants developed confidence, leadership skills, discipline, and teamwork while learning to support one another both on and off the court. The initiative helped break down social barriers between students with and without intellectual disabilities and demonstrated how sport can create more welcoming and inclusive school communities. By introducing badminton to new schools and engaging young people in Unified activities, the project laid the foundation for continued participation and inclusion through sport across Cameroon.

Project Leader Reflection

William and Ambroise are most proud of inspiring more young people to participate in Unified badminton and experience the benefits of inclusion through sport. For William, the project was especially meaningful because it helped him use his experiences to positively impact others. Moving forward, the team plans to continue offering badminton opportunities in Unified schools and creating spaces where athletes and partners can build lasting friendships and support one another both on and off the playing field.
