Rahul and Shoobham will organize a beach clean up to teach other Youth Leaders about the environment, pollution, and climate change.

About The Project Leaders

Rahul is a 21-year-old from Riviere du Rempart, Mauritius. Rahul has lived his entire life with epilepsy and intellectual disabilities. Despite his challenges, Rahul successfully completed his primary education at Rampersad Bundhun Government School. He then pursued pre-vocational training at the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD). Rahul is a vibrant individual who loves making friends. Rahul also loves playing sports, such as football, swimming, and badminton. Rahul has competed in Special Olympics athletics and ran the 100m and 200m races. He has participated in many tournaments over the years and won various medals for his achievements.

Shoobham is a 20-year-old from Central Flaqc, Mauritius. He is a proud and dedicated Youth Leader and is a volunteer for both Special Olympics Mauritius and Laventure Technical School for the Disabled. Shoobham is always present in all activities organized by the SOM and the Laventure School. He is very dynamic, problem solving and creative. Despite his busy schedule, he volunteers himself to help the Laventure School in its extra-curricular activities. He also assists during the activities of Special Olympics Mauritius.

The Inspiration

Rahul and Shoobham noticed that if they go for a walk along a public beach in Mauritius, especially on a Monday morning, they are likely to find a variety of random garbage out there including plastic bags, bottles, plastic bottles, cans, and other trash. Mauritius, being a tourist Island, highly relies on tourism for its economy. Such pollution on the beaches of Mauritius destructs the natural environment. Consequently, Youth Leaders and athletes will attempt to solve this problem through this project by cleaning up the environment and beaches through the organization of a cleaning campaign.

The Plan

These Youth Leaders will empower other young people to engage their peers and community in creating inclusion by organizing a cleaning campaign. They will bring about 30 youth with and 30 youth without intellectual disabilities together to clean a part of the beach/natural environment which is near the Salt of Palmar Hotel situated in Palmar. After the cleaning process, all the young people will participate in Unified bocce. The following day, Rahul and Shoobham will organize a Youth Forum where around 30 youth and 30 athletes with ID will participate. The Forum will raise awareness about Special Olympics and impart leadership training.

Project Goals

This project aims to create inclusive opportunities in the community through the cleaning of environment and beaches and the implementation of a Unified bocce competition. This project will also create awareness on how leadership can motivate youth with and without intellectual disabilities to play and work together by changing mindsets.
