Soin and Ananias will create a community wellness program for people with and without intellectual disabilities.
About The Project Leaders
Soin, 21, and Ananias, 23, are Youth Leaders from Windhoek, Namibia. Soin has been involved with SO Namibia since completing a 2021 Youth Innovation Project and participating in a local Family Health Forum. Soin became a Youth Leader because she wants to raise awareness in the community for people with intellectual disabilities by promoting inclusion. Soin and Ananias believe that youth innovation activities are a great opportunity to empower youth and equip them will skills that allow them to be ambassadors for inclusion and champions for change.
The Inspiration
Soin and Ananias noticed that the third Sustainable Development Goal, which is good health and well-being, is not being met in Namibia, particularly for individuals with intellectual disabilities. There is evidence supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities having more health conditions than individuals without and therefore good nutrition, health and fitness are extremely important to help combat these issues.
The Plan
Soin and Ananias plan to start a community wellness program involving sharing information about the importance of health, fitness, and nutrition. The program includes training a Youth Leader to become an expert on fitness and lead fitness sessions for Unified pairs in the community. This program is intended for all individuals with and without disabilities who want to improve their fitness levels. The program is also set to include an education program which focuses on diet, nutrition, and reproductive health.
Project Goals
When the project is complete, Soin and Ananias hope to spread awareness and education on important topics such as health, nutrition, fitness, and reproductive health. Eventually, they hope to establish partnerships with local schools and community organizations who can provide fitness instructors or nutrition experts to share their skills and knowledge.
