Chenglin is a Special Olympics Youth Leader from China and a participant in the 2021 Special Olympics China Regional Youth Leadership Activities.
Chenglin will lead a Youth Innovation Project that teaches people with intellectual disabilities about the policies that relate to them and how to take the initiative to utilize them. He was inspired to take on this project when he realized that most intellectual training centers focus on life, vocational, and sports skills trainings, which also represent the three paths that society envisions for those with intellectual disabilities: “home, simple handicraft and special athletes.” With this project, Chenglin wants to empower and provide athletes with the tools and resources to choose their own path.
Over nine months, Chenglin and 10 new Youth Leaders will cooperate with the United Nations Development Programme to simplify the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals into a more easily understandable format. They will then prepare teaching materials to disseminate this information and publicize the project with the hope of recruiting around 40 athletes to engage in trainings, which will be held at local schools and public welfare organizations. After the project is over, the new Youth Leaders can disseminate these materials at the Anhui Normal University, meaning Chenglin’s project will enable even more people with intellectual disabilities to be more informed and in control of their futures for many years to come.
