Thomas and Japhet are Special Olympics Youth Leaders and Athlete Leaders from Papua New Guinea who will lead a Youth Innovation Project that aims to embody the fourth UN Sustainable Development Goal by providing quality education for youth with intellectual disabilities in their country.

Thomas and Japhet noticed a crucial need for this project since most Special Olympics athletes in Papua New Guinea stop going to school after sixth grade because there are no inclusive schools to accommodate them. In this project, Thomas and Japhet will help five Athlete Leaders to be selected and enrolled in online schooling to finish grades 7 and 8, thereby also enabling them to continue their education in secondary schools and college in the future.

Over a period of nine months, Thomas and Japhet will work with Special Olympics Papua New Guinea (SOPNG) to select five Athlete Leaders to enroll in the Flexible Open Distant Education Program. Selected Athlete Leaders will conduct weekly check-ins throughout the program with staff and a project mentor at the SOPNG office, as well as continue Special Olympics sports and activities. Through their project, Thomas and Japhet are empowering Athlete Leaders to fight for their rights and be accepted and included in their communities and to fulfill UN Sustainable Development Goal #8, which advocates for decent work for all. Thomas and Japhet believe this will help Athlete Leaders to be better respected in the community, support them in finding future employment and contribute to economic growth in Papua New Guinea, forever impacting their lives through education.
