About The Project Leaders

Gabriela is a 23-year-old from San Salvador, El Salvador. Gabriela is currently studying Salvadoran Sign Language (LESSA) at the Pedagogical University where she is learning the skills to communicate with and teach children with language and hearing difficulties. Gabriela has been an artistic gymnastics athlete for Special Olympics for over 3 years. She is an athlete leader and has taken courses and participated in workshops to develop her leadership skills. Gabriela feels that Special Olympics has opened doors for her to overcome many obstacles she faces, and is proud to be a part of the Unified Generation.

Wendy is a 20-year-old from Colonia Florencia in San Marcos, El Salvador. She studies special education at the Evangelical University of El Salvador. After graduating, Wendy hopes to work as a special education teacher. She is currently working in a kindergarten classroom as a teacher’s assistant. Wendy has been involved with Special Olympics El Salvador for 6 years, participating in various activities as a volunteer and Unified partner over the years. Wendy’s brother is a Special Olympics athlete, and for many years she has accompanied him to his trainings and competitions, and has seen the positive impact Special Olympics has on people with and without intellectual disabilities firsthand. Wendy is part of the Unified Generation because she is proud to share all she has learned within her projects with Special Olympics with other Youth Leaders and takes great pride in spreading the message of inclusion.

The Inspiration

Gabriela and Wendy view art as a great medium for unity. Within art, everyone has room to express themselves, create something meaningful, and communicate without the barrier of language. Through their project, Gabriela and Wendy hope to inspire a love of art within youth and provide them a space to refine their artistic abilities and showcase their talents.
