Benjamin and Tanner will raise awareness about inclusion in their community through partnering with the other organizations to host Unified Sports events on their college's campus.

About the Project Leaders

Tanner is a 22-year-old, and is a member of the Carroll College Special Olympics Club, which promotes inclusion and respect for everyone. Tanner has been an athlete in Special Olympics for 15 years. He has participated in bowling, athletics, basketball, bocce, soccer, kayaking and aquatics. Tanner was a member of the Special Olympics Youth Activation Committee for 4 years during high school. With that role, Tanner helped facilitate Respect Rallies and spoke at school assemblies, spreading the word of inclusion. In 2019, Tanner was selected as the spokesperson for National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and spoke at the State Capital and other engagements on behalf of people with Intellectual Disabilities. Tanner currently works at his local Bowling Alley and Trampoline Park. Through Tanner's example, he is showing his fellow classmates, colleagues, and community members the importance and the need to be included in all aspects of life.

Benjamin is a 20-year-old and has been involved with Special Olympics for 7 years. Of these, he primarily volunteered in the main office of Special Olympics Montana for his first four years, and has been a Unified partner for the Helena Halos for the past three years. On top of this, Ben is also the Vice President and Treasurer for Carroll College Special Olympics Club, a club that was established in 2020. Through this role, Ben has become close with many athletes, and has served as a bridge between Carroll College and the college-aged Special Olympics Athletes in the greater Helena area. As a member of the Carroll Football team, Ben has also helped give the Halos access to Carroll facilities for practices and other events. Ben became a Youth Leader to promote inclusion for Special Olympics Athletes at Carroll College and to bring joy to both himself and the athletes he partners with.

The Inspiration

Carroll College Special Olympics Club (CCSO) is a young club that became fully established in 2020. In the first few years of operation, members of the club have aspired to promote inclusion, advocate for the club, and recognize the Special Olympics athletes. Despite club efforts, the large campus community makes it difficult to spread awareness of the club and its events. The CCSO club and its officers seek to grow club awareness by ensuring that all Carroll students as well as the Helena community are aware of the club and its mission.

The Plan

To increase the awareness of CCSO, Tanner and Ben hope to attract Carroll students by hosting Unified Sports and other events on behalf of the club and the Helena Halos. At these events, they will make it clear that CCSO is the sponsor, and they will invite Special Olympics Athletes to attend. Their goal is to have the athletes help run the events as well as to participate in them. Tanner and Ben along with the support of CCSO also hope to create a logo and some branded merchandise for the club to promote awareness of it and spread the message of inclusion with as many people as possible!

Project Goals

Tanner and Ben’s overarching goal is to promote the CCSO club, provide athletes the opportunity to feel involved with the campus community, and most importantly, raise awareness and respect for Special Olympics athletes through increased inclusion within the Carroll College campus community.
