Makenna is a Special Olympics Youth Leader from Idaho who was inspired by one of her best friends, who has Down Syndrome, to lead a Youth Innovation Project aimed at expanding the Unified Sports programming within her school.
By implementing sports events at her high school, she plans to provide an avenue for students with intellectual disabilities to get involved in events and feel included in the community. Makenna’s vision is creating the kind of event where youth of ALL abilities compete together and support each other, so that everyone wins both on and off the field. Over a period of 6 months, Makenna will organize two sports events at her high school – one in the winter and one in the spring – through an organization called IncludeAbility, Inc. The organization has guiding principles like inclusion, integrity, leadership and compassion that she hopes to spread to new Youth Leaders and volunteers and see embodied at these events. As part of the Unified Generation, Makenna believes that Unified Sports will not only help young people grow physically, socially, and intellectually, but will also encourage people to focus on what unites us instead of limits us.
