Nina and Rubina are developing accessible learning materials for youth with and without intellectual disabilities to use to learn how to ski.
About the Project Leaders
Nina is a 20-year-old from Austria. She has been involved with Special Olympics for over 8 years and participates in skiing, swimming, dancing and fitness. Nina is passionate about skiing and wants to encourage more young people to learn how to ski. She wants to be a role-model for youth with and without ID in her community.
Rubina is a 16-year-old from Austria. She has been involved with Special Olympics for her entire life as her mom works for Special Olympics. Rubina decided to become a Youth Leader so she could use her background and education as a ski instructor to benefit young athletes with intellectual disabilities. She hopes to impart her wisdom and skills and help people in the process!
The Inspiration
Nina and Rubina noticed that there are no instructional videos for young athletes with intellectual disabilities to watch to learn how to ski. They want to make the sport accessible for all people.
The Plan
Nina and Rubina will record videos teaching skiing skills ranging from beginner to advanced. The video recordings will be described in a manual and youth can access the videos and their descriptions via a QR code. The manual will then be posted in schools so that young students can help athletes with intellectual disabilities learn to ski. The videos will be made directly accessible to youth with disabilities, too.
Project Goals
Nina and Rubina hope that young people in Austria with intellectual disabilities will learn some skiing skills through watching their videos! Nina and Rubina will also develop new video editing skills, that will continue to support them in their Special Olympics journey.
