Aya and Sohayla are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Egypt who are leading a Youth Innovation Project aimed at creating an inclusive educational environment through Unified Sports.
They were inspired by their own experiences with Special Olympics to raise social awareness about intellectual disabilities and creating a more inclusive society. In this project, Aya and Sohayla will use sports to bring youth with and without intellectual disabilities together, thereby establishing new Unified Schools, engaging new Youth Leaders, and encouraging youth to spread the message of inclusion.
Over 9 months, Aya and Sohayla will lead a multifaceted project that begins with youth awareness meetings at various educational institutions highlighting the importance of inclusion between students and athletes. They will then host Unified Sports practices such as football, table tennis and more, as well as use the opportunity to engage and teach siblings of Special Olympics athletes about spreading a culture of volunteering and inclusion in the educational community. Through this work, Aya and Sohayla hope to prepare a group of youth ambassadors to be speakers and advocates, thereby amplifying their message and keeping the project alive long past its deadline. As members of the Unified Generation, Aya and Sohayla believe that empowering youth in this way will help with the integration of people with intellectual disabilities into Egyptian society at large.
