Reibal and Muhammed recognized that many youth with intellectual disabilities in Pakistan are taught at totally or partially segregated schools, which deprives them of the same resources as students in mainstream schools and keeps them from reaching their full potential. Through this inclusive education project, Reibal and Muhammed hope to combat these issues and reduce stigmas, social barriers and a general lack of acceptance faced by people with intellectual disabilities.

Over 9 months, Reibal and Muhammed will bring the idea of Unified Classrooms to schools in their community through demonstrations of the concept supplemented with Unified Sports, awareness campaigns, and other engagement activities. The Unified Classroom model will include Peer Buddy sessions, which pair a youth with and without intellectual disabilities together and allow for meaningful interpersonal interactions. Reibal and Muhammed believe this model will empower youth to become catalysts for inclusion and inspire schools to incorporate regular Unified Classroom activities in the schools’ calendar so the project continues well past its deadline. With these initiatives, Reibal and Muhammed are creating a more inclusive community and helping youth with and without intellectual disabilities develop essential life and interpersonal skills.
