Nontsikelelo is a sibling and Special Olympics Youth Leader from Eswatini who is leading a Youth Innovation Project aimed at increasing participation in Special Olympics and raising awareness about intellectual disabilities.
Nontsikelelo will partner with the Hlatikhulu Youth Development Club to raise awareness in their community by inviting people with disabilities and their siblings to their 3-day workshop. Topics for their workshop will include opportunities for engagement, emotional wellness, fitness, and how to create a support network.
Over the course of nine months, Nontsikelelo hopes to engage 65 participants in the workshops. Nontsikelelo was inspired by the lack of awareness about intellectual disabilities in the community and from wanting more engagement with Special Olympics from youth like her. By hosting these workshops, Nontsikelelo will create a platform for youth with and without intellectual disabilities to engage and become friends who work together and eventually create a club for sustainable relationships and new leaders. By thinking innovatively, Nontsikelelo is inspiring the Unified Network to spread awareness and engage new Youth Leaders wherever they may be.
