Wanda and Sanda are brothers and Special Olympics Youth Leaders from South Africa who will lead a Youth Innovation Project to create a sibling network and expand Unified Leadership training for youth with and without intellectual disabilities as part of programming at their school.
Wanda and Sanda will connect siblings to engage in discussions and workshops where they will share ideas on how to expand and improve programming that supports siblings with and without intellectual disabilities. Wanda and Sanda believe their Unified sibling network will connect siblings and families with support, resources, and tools they need to navigate personal challenges and empower each other for success.
Over nine months, Wanda and Sanda’s team will create a sibling support network for youth with and without intellectual disabilities and their parents that will facilitate conversations and Unified Sports activities that will help them navigate unique family challenges and use Unified Sports as a tool for connection. Wanda and Sanda will use in-person and virtual platforms to connect participants to programming and resources that will assist them in managing the challenges they face as siblings. While supporting their sibling network, Wanda and Sanda will demonstrate, the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for family members to engage in conversations and activities that support development of people with intellectual disabilities.
