Siosi and Tenahlee are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Papua New Guinea who are leading a Youth Innovation Project aimed at bringing better healthcare to individuals with intellectual disabilities and helping them to develop a healthier lifestyle.

They want to combat the issue of poor health in people with intellectual disabilities and promote UN Sustainable Development Goal #3, which aims to improve health and well-being for all, by raising awareness about intellectual disabilities in future leaders of the medical field. Siosi and Tenahlee hope that this will both improve the skills of medical professionals and spread a culture of inclusion, understanding and acceptance in medical fields.

Siosi and Tenahlee have already conducted their first awareness session at a university and got overwhelming support from students and lecturers. Over 9 months, they will train more Athlete Leaders to lead these presentations at other universities and spread the message of inclusion even further. Through this project, Siosi and Tenahlee are helping medical professionals to better understand the communities they live in so they can make better and fairer decisions when it comes to accommodating people with intellectual disabilities, and possibly even get involved with Special Olympics themselves. Siosi and Tenahlee will also hone the leadership and communication skills of new Athlete Leaders, which allows them to lead by example and advocate for themselves in the future.
