Komogelo and Amahle hope to engage parents of children with and without intellectual disabilities, teachers, and community members about advocacy and inclusion by implementing monthly Special Olympics programs that initiates conversations and activities to connect and support their children. Komogelo and Amahle believe their Special Olympics pilot sibling network will unite children and their parents in a single platform where they can discuss challenges and identify solutions in a safe and inclusive environment.

Over nine months, Komogelo and Amahle’s will facilitate early introductions and participation in Special Olympics Young Athletes and Unified Sports programming. This program will help participants navigate unique family challenges and find confidence and acceptance. Komogelo and Amahle’s project will use in-person and virtual platforms to connect participants and assist them in managing the challenges they face as family members with intellectual disabilities. While guiding participants through the pilot program, Komogelo and Amahle’s program will bring together parents and their children and empower them to create connections within their community and spread messages of inclusion across South Africa.
