About the Project Leaders

Isa is a 23-year-old who lives in the village of Ma’amir in Bahrain. He joined Special Olympics Bahrain as a volunteer in 2018. Isa participated in many activities hosted by Special Olympic Bahrain, and one of the most significant of these participations to him was the regional equestrian championship held in 2019 in Bahrain which had the participation of more than 9 countries. Isa eventually stepped into a leadership role and joined the Youth Committee. He helped to lead a training workshop for young people with and without intellectual disabilities. Isa believes in the importance of young people participating in society and spreading messages of importance to them. To Isa, the most important message is inclusion.

Abdul Rahman is a 22-year-old who lives in Riffa Bukwara, Bahrain. As a Special Olympics athlete, Abdul Rahman is committed to his sport and dedicated to helping others improve their sports. He is also a strong leader and takes pride in his ability to coach students while playing sports. Abdul Rahman is thrilled to be a Youth Leader as it grants him the opportunity to further develop his leadership skills and to represent Bahrain in an international setting.

The Inspiration

Isa and Abdul Rahman noticed that in their community and globally, people with intellectual disabilities are far less fortunate in employment because of their disability status which results in discrimination they face when attempting to enter the workforce. They want to change this and help young people with intellectual disabilities develop marketable and employable skill sets to make them more competitive candidates when they apply for jobs.

The Plan

Isa and Abdul Rahman have developed a program to include the most important aspects of life skills. Their program will focus on the 4 sub-competencies, learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together. After their project ends, they will measure the success of the program with young completing a self-assessment on different life skills areas.

Project Goals

The main objective of the program is to integrate people with intellectual disabilities into society and motivate young people with intellectual disabilities to seek out jobs. They want people with intellectual disabilities to feel more confident being independent by entering the work force.
