Our Sanctuary is a student-led fitness challenge that replaced a planned safe space with a wellness initiative, building inclusion, confidence, and friendships through affirmations, movement, and peer support.
About the Project
Our Sanctuary began as a dream to create a physical safe space for inclusion at Northland High School but evolved into a fitness challenge that brought together students of all abilities to build friendships and wellness. The project centered on weekly activities, affirmations, and paired workouts designed to support physical, mental, and social health.
The Inspiration
Youth leaders Mamie Joe and Fatima Sall initially envisioned a sanctuary room for connection and creativity, but pivoted their plans after facing space limitations at school. Inspired by their community’s support and their own desire to foster health and inclusion, they reimagined the sanctuary as a holistic fitness experience.
The Project
The team launched a multi-week challenge that paired students to complete workouts, write affirmations, and encourage each other, using Fit Kits, printed guides, and app-based engagement. The experience culminated in a celebratory after-party and highlighted growth in both individual confidence and group cohesion.
Project Impact
The project directly engaged 36 youth leaders, including 17 Special Olympics athletes and 19 peers without ID, launched two new Unified Sports Clubs, and expanded programming in two schools. Participants reported increased confidence, better fitness habits, and new friendships that extended beyond the program.
Project Leader Reflection
Mamie and Fatima are proud of how their initiative helped people form lasting bonds and break out of their comfort zones. They now hope to start a Unified fitness club at Ohio State University and replicate similar inclusive programs in their future communities.
