The project aimed to educate family members and communities in Senegal about intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), dispel common myths, and promote empathy and inclusion. Through partnerships with schools, universities, and local businesses, the initiative encouraged greater understanding and acceptance of people with IDD.

About the Project

Sokhna Mariame and Tidiane are two youth leaders from Senegal who raised awareness about intellectual and developmental disabilities by educating families and community members, challenging misconceptions, and promoting inclusion. Through workshops, community events, and partnerships with schools and local organizations, the initiative empowered siblings and families to become active advocates while fostering greater empathy, respect, and support for people with IDD.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by Sokhna Mariame's brother and sister, both of whom have Down syndrome. Their experiences, along with the support they received from their family and the leaders of Special Olympics Senegal, motivated Sokhna Mariame to raise awareness and strengthen inclusion within the community.

The Project

The project focused on increasing awareness among families of individuals with IDD, emphasizing the important roles that parents and siblings play in supporting and empowering their loved ones. Activities included educational sessions on the responsible use of social media and new technologies, discussions about the role of siblings, and a celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Beyond the family, the project engaged the broader community by providing education about IDD, including what it is, the conditions associated with it, and how it can affect learning, communication, and problem-solving. The initiative also worked to challenge misconceptions and foster empathy and inclusion.

Project Impact

The project strengthened families' understanding of their role in empowering young people with intellectual disabilities and supporting their inclusion in Senegal. The activities promoted respect, solidarity, and collaboration among Special Olympics athletes, their siblings, and other young people in the community.

Project Leaders Reflection

The project successfully achieved its objectives by encouraging family members, particularly siblings of individuals with IDD, to become proud and active supporters of their brothers and sisters. Participants also committed to taking part in Special Olympics activities alongside their siblings and continuing to promote awareness and inclusion within their communities.
