The “Siblings Influencing the Unified Footprints of Tomorrow” project focused on empowering siblings of individuals with intellectual disabilities through increasing their understanding, empathy, and ability to support their family members. Through workshops, dialogue, and shared experiences, the project addressed gaps in awareness, strengthened family relationships, and promoted inclusion.

About the Project

This project organized a siblings-only workshop after the youth leaders recognized that many siblings of individuals with intellectual disabilities lacked knowledge and awareness, which often led to misunderstandings and emotional distance.

Through the project, a professional speaker was invited to provide education about intellectual disabilities and the conditions associated with them. Participants engaged in interactive sessions where they could ask questions, share personal experiences, and learn from one another in a safe and supportive environment.

The project created a space for honest conversation, helping siblings better understand their roles and building stronger, more supportive relationships within their families.

The Inspiration

The project was inspired by personal experiences, particularly the leaders’ own relationships as siblings. Their resilience and strength motivated the youth leaders to create a platform that supports and empowers families. The initiative was also supported by Special Olympics Zimbabwe staff, fellow youth leaders, family members, and professionals such as social workers who contributed their expertise and guidance.

The Project

The project centered on hosting a dedicated sibling's workshop, bringing together participants to learn about intellectual disabilities and how to better support their siblings. A professional speaker led educational sessions, while interactive discussions allowed participants to openly share their experiences.

In addition to the workshop, the project expanded to include youth activation forums in schools, unified sports activities, and family engagement sessions. These activities helped raise awareness and promote inclusion not only within families but also across schools and communities.

Project Impact

The project had a significant and deeply personal impact on families and communities in Hwange and Binga. By creating opportunities for learning, dialogue, and shared experiences, the initiative helped siblings develop empathy, patience, and confidence in supporting their loved ones.

One of the most meaningful outcomes was the strengthened relationships between siblings. Participants reported feeling less alone in their experiences and more equipped to advocate for their siblings. The project also empowered youth to become agents of change, promoting inclusion and awareness beyond the initial activities.

Project Leader Reflection

The youth leaders reflected on the powerful experience of seeing siblings openly share their stories and connect with others who had similar stories. Creating a safe and supportive environment allowed participants to learn from one another and build meaningful connections.
