I have always been very protective and concerned about my younger sister, Sagarika, who was born with an intellectual disability. I feel extremely blessed to have a sister like her.

My name is Katherine and I am a senior at Lawrence High school! I first got involved with Special Olympics through Unified basketball at my school. This is where I met one of my best friends, and my partner, Gracie Flanagan! I have been involved in Unified basketball, soccer, and bocce, but my favorite is basketball! I also serve on the Youth Activation Committee for Special Olympics Kansas. Promoting inclusion is so important and I hope to use my position as an ambassador to being inclusion to my community, state, and country.

As an educator and trainer, Nikoleta is dedicated to serving youth in her hometown of Patras, Greece. During the day, Nikoleta is a physical education teacher at Primary School 24, and after school, she’s a swim coach for Special Olympics Hellas.

Special Olympics Denmark (SODK) was established in 1985 as part of Dansk Handicap Idræts-Forbund (Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled). Since 2001 we have been focused on developing sport for people with learning disabilities using the Special Olympics concepts. We primarily use the Special Olympics concepts to develop local, regional and national tournaments and games and give people with learning disabilities the opportunity to participate in sports events abroad.

We offer opportunities to children and adults with a learning disability and are working to expand opportunities to reach further in the years to come. Children and adults with learning disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally, socially and spiritually and, through their activities, exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm, enjoying the rewards of friendship and ultimately discovering new abilities and talents.

Special Olympics is a global organization that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is staggering.

It’s at the local level--right here--where interested volunteers meet the athletes. That’s where the perceptions start to change and where the miracle of transformation takes place.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.
