Special Olympics Named Finalist for 2026 Cynopsis Sports Award

Coverage of the 2026 Special Olympics 3x3 Basketball Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico has been named a finalist in the Sports Social Impact Initiative category at the 2026 Cynopsis Sports Awards.

On 22 April 2026, Cynopsis announced the finalists for the 2026 Cynopsis Sports Awards, recognizing standout achievements across the sports media ecosystem from content and platforms to marketing, innovation, and purpose-driven storytelling. The awards spotlight work that not only engages fans but also advances meaningful impact through sports.

Niamh Nelson, Special Olympics Manager of Storytelling Activation & Sport Communication, led the awareness activities. “Being named a finalist is a great honor and is a direct reflection on the incredible work shown by our teams in the competition,” Nelson said. “This nomination reinforces the mission of Special Olympics which champions inclusion by bringing people with and without intellectual disabilities together through the power of sport to create meaningful, lasting impact. I am proud to be part of the Special Olympics movement.”

The Special Olympics coverage of the first ever 3x3 international Unified basketball tournament was selected as a finalist along with media and broadcast giants such as ESPN, NBC, FOX Sports, Prime Video, NFL Media, Nielsen, Playfly Sports, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Barstool Sports, CBS Sports, and YES Network.

“This year’s finalists represent the creativity, innovation and leadership that continue to move the sports industry forward,” said Lynn Leahey, Editorial Director, Cynopsis. “Alongside our Luminary and Top Women in Sports honorees, they reflect the individuals and organizations setting the standard for excellence across the business of sports.”
