About Young Athletes
Special Olympics Young Athletes is an early childhood play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities (ID), ages 2 to 7 years old.
Introduces basic sport skills, like running, kicking and throwing.
Offers families, teachers, caregivers and people from the community the chance to share the joy of sports with all children.
Provides children of all abilities the same opportunities to advance in core developmental milestones.

Motor skills
Children with intellectual disabilities who took part in Young Athletes developed motor skills more than twice as fast as others who did not take part.
Sport readiness
Young Athletes helps children get ready to take part in sports when they are older.
Attitudes and expectations
Family members reported raised hopes for their child’s future and more acceptance from those in their communities.
Confidence
Family members whose children participate in Young Athletes saw improvement in their own empowerment and self-efficacy, giving them more confidence to support their child with ID.
Development Skills
Children who took part in YA saw increases in daily living, communication, and social emotional skills as well as decreases in challenging behaviors.
