The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics transforms lives through the joy of sport, every day, everywhere. We are the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities: with more than 4.2 million athletes in 170 countries -- and millions more volunteers and supporters. We are a designated 501(c)3 nonprofit (EIN/Tax ID number: 52-0889518).Special Olympics mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968. Through the power of sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment -- on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential. With training and competitions in 32 Olympic-style sports, our athletes push hard and play harder. They strive to beat their personal bests, defying the odds again and again. From the local ballfields to the shining stage of the World Games, from swimming to snowboarding, our athletes showcase the talents and triumphs of people with intellectual disabilities. There are about 200 million people with intellectual disabilities around the world. We want to reach out to every one of them – and their families and communities as well. While we are known for sports, Special Olympics is also the world's largest public health organization for people with intellectual disabilities. Many of our athletes come to us with neglected health problems - our goal is to bring better fitness, nutrition and healthier lifestyles to everyone involved in Special Olympics.Special Olympics is changing attitudes. We fight negative stereotypes and misperceptions, educating people young and old about the skills and gifts of our athletes.Special Olympics works to spread compassion and acceptance in a way that can unite the world. Our goal is to awaken everyone -- and every community -- to each person’s common humanity.
We are committed to responsible stewardship of your support and are proud of our high standards.
